HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Volunteers for the Red Oak Victory are needed for all departments: deck, engineering, and stewards, as well as docents to help with ship tours. While those with shipboard experience are welcomed with open arms, those with little or no marine background can be of tremendous help in bringing the ship back into operating condition.

Most work done by the deck department involves removing old paint, cleaning, preparing and re-painting surfaces. Newcomers are shown how to use chipping hammers and air powered needle guns to remove paint and how to use the personal protective devices provided for eyes, ears, and Nose. Cleaned areas are prepared with a metal stabilizing solution and then primed and painted.

For those who prefer to deal with woodwork. All interior doors and cabinets are stripped to the bare wood, sanded and varnished. Volunteers can also help adjust mooring lines, and learn the operation of winches, booms and cargo runners used to load or unload heavy equipment.

Docents needed!

We are getting more and more groups aboard the ROV for tours. There is a need for tour guides (docents) to help conduct these tours.

Our daily visitors and private group events all need attention.

Training is provided by a staff of veterans, historians, and trainers and the only requirement of docents is a little time and a lot of enthusiasm for the restoration of our historic link to Richmond and America's proud and colorful past.

Your support is greatly appreciated!
